Competition | Competition regulations

Art.1 The Ensemble Mandolinistico Estense association organizes the fourth ed. of the International Competition for solo mandolin, dedicated to the memory of Michelangelo Policarpo, to which mandolinists of all nationalities can participate. Competitors who have not reached the age of majority must be accompanied by a parent or an adult in possession of parental authorization and authorization. The competition has three money prizes of € 1,000.00 (Euro Thousand), € 600.00 (Euro six hundred) and € 400.00 (Euro four hundred).

2): The Competition will be held in the Roberto Verti Auditorium of the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali Vecchi-Tonelli in Modena, Italy (address: via Goldoni 10) from 12. to 13. April 2019.  Applications for participation in the Competition can be downloaded on line from the Ensemble Mandolinistico Estense website ( and should be filled out and sent (in .pdf or .doc format) to the email address or can be sent by registered post to the following address:

The Competition's application fee is 50,00 (fifty) Euro.  This application fee can only be refunded in the event of the cancellation of the Competition.  All applications must be received no later than March 10 2019.

3): All participants must include the following with their application:

• a photocopy of a valid ID document (if the participant is a minor, this must be accompanied by a copy of the accompanying adult's ID document, as well as a letter of permission from the participant's parent if the accompanying adult is not a parent);

• a brief biography of the participant;

• a list of the pieces to be performed, specifying composer, title and duration of each piece;

• a copy of the payment receipt, made by bank wire transfer to the following account:

4): Participants will have to perform three pieces including a solo composition for mandolin of their choice lasting at least 2 and max 10 minutes (transcriptions from compositions for other solo instruments are also accepted), one obligatory composition (Primo Silvestri Strimpellata, the score will be sent by e-mail for free on request), and one composition to choose among those listed in the following list:

Participants may ask  the Competition's organization to receive by mail scores in pdf format of the obligatory free domain pieces to which they are interested, while they will have to purchase the pieces subject to protection on their own account. All participants must submit one copy of the scores of each piece they will perform to the Competition jury.

5): All participants must present themselves at the Competition's opening at 9.00 am on April 12th 2019, under penalty of exclusion from the competition with a valid personal identity document. Any late arriving competitors will be heard at the end of the competition's audition, if the audition is still in course and only if their late arrival can be justified as due to circumstances beyond their control. The auditions will be open to the public and includes the performance of the obligatory pieces on Friday, April 12, 2019, while on Saturday, April 13, 2019, the contestants must perform the piece of their free choice. The final judgments will be expressed and communicated at the end of the auditions on 13. April.

6): The Competition's jury will be will be composed by the musicians Carlo Aonzo, Annika Hinsche, Gianluca Fortino, Leonardo Lospalluti, Roberto Palumbo; the judgments will be unquestionable and definitive. The Jury's members will submit their votes in secret, utilising a scale of 1 to 100. Any members of the jury who have had teaching experience with any of the Competition's participants will abstain from voting.

7): The Competition's organizing committee reserves the right to make any modifications to the present Regulations which it may deem necessary and with due cause, in which case all participants will be informed without delay.

8): All travel, food and lodging costs are at expense of the participants.  The Competition's organizing committee will publish a list of local hotels and restaurants on their website.

9): Any matters not explicitly concerned by these regulations will be under the authority of the Competition's artistic commission.

10): The Competition's organizing committee will accept no responsability for accidents, illness, injury or other damages incurred during travel to or from the Competition, or during the duration of the Competition.

11): In accordance with Italian legislation on matters of personal privacy, all information provided by participants will be held by the Competition's organizing committee, and used exclusively for the organization the Competition itself. All participants have the right to cancel or correct this information, or to prohibit its use.

12): Participants will have no claim to rights of any recordings, or to transmissions or distributions of these, which may be made of their performances during the Competition.
